About The Position

Mass Audubon is seeking seasonal Assistant Field Technicians! In this position, you will train to manage the care and feeding of all onsite marine life and insects and be responsible for the weekly water chemistry of our tanks, the refilling of bird feeders, and monthly partial water changes and animal inventory. Assistant Field Technicians lead bi-monthly trips to the coast and wetlands to collect and release wildlife. Individuals in this position present a deliverable summarizing their experience to their peers.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliable, adaptable, and proactive, with the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Experience with working outdoors in all conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with live animal care (aquaria of marine or freshwater life preferred)
  • Local knowledge of New England coastal ecology
  • Knowledge of botany or gardening
  • Knowledge of birds and birding experience
  • Experience with wildlife photography or web design

Responsibilities

  • Collect live organisms from the coast, wetlands and garden and create appropriate temporary housing using tanks, insect cages and terrariums
  • Follow a daily, weekly and monthly maintenance schedule for all onsite wildlife care including feeding, cleaning, and water changes
  • Record data, observations and daily statistics in the online Animal Care Journal
  • Submit photos and brief videos on a weekly basis to the online Animal Care Journal
  • Perform weekly water chemistry including salinity, NH4, NO2, NO3, and pH
  • Assist with setting up temporary life support for animals needed for programs and return them to their habitats after
  • Responsible for aquarium equipment maintenance and seawater replacement using Instant Ocean sea salt
  • Present our animals to the public during programs and events
  • Respect diversity and inclusion efforts to promote awareness

Benefits

  • This position’s pay range is $16.72-18.81/hour; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.
