This position offers the chance to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that’s constantly evolving. This is an entry level position for the Business team. It maintains the same key responsibilities of the Business Manager role but manages fewer categories. The position is structured to allow adequate time for the development of the team member and the skills required of a Business Manager before taking on a full desk. The Assistant Grocery Sales Manager is expected to be the resident expert in the categories he/she is assigned, responsible for driving sales, units, and profit in those categories. This would include keeping us on trend and relevant in the minds of our guests for those categories, by fine tuning item assortment, while negotiating relentlessly for the lowest possible cost of goods, in order to keep our everyday retails competitive. In addition, this position is responsible for creating and implementing promotional/merchandising plans that support our overarching “Go to Market” strategy, which would include, but not limited to our weekly ads, monthly display planner, shopper marketing efforts and ecommerce platform.

Requirements

  • Bachelors' Degree and/or 3-5 years of related experience in category management
  • Possess strong analytical skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong computer skills & proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Understand gross profit as it applies to the grocery industry
  • Understand United's pricing structure and relationships as it pertains to the Grocery, Dairy and Frozen Food Departments
  • Enjoy working and collaborating in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills for developing positive and efficient working relationships with partners, fellow team members, the DC Replenishment team, as well as our retail Operations team.
  • Ability to gain trust, respect, and buy-in from all levels of the organization
  • Ability to lead, adapt to and influence change in organizational process and practices
  • Ability to work independently without supervision and effectively manage time
  • Ability to accept supervisory coaching related to performance, work habits and attitude
  • Ability to create, implement and monitor effective business plans
  • Ability to travel occasionally, some overnight could be required

Responsibilities

  • Act as the master merchant in assigned categories by creating complete sales and merchandising plans for retail execution to meet guest needs and maximize sales and profits
  • Provide analysis and develop recommendations for category and consumer trends
  • Create recommendations for new item placement and category schematics
  • Understand the pricing structure we will need to compete in each of our market areas, and relentlessly negotiate for the lowest possible cost of goods to support these retails without compressing margins
  • Develop the promotional/merchandising strategy for each category of responsibility; align this with the timing/season of the ad planning and display planning process that supports the United “Go to Market” strategy.
  • Formulate ad writing recommendations on promotional items to maximize sales
  • Develop a Store Brand strategy in each category to meet United's distribution goals and profits related to our primary competitor
  • Support “best in class” category management standards
  • Seek out innovative products to keep categories relevant in the eyes of our guests
  • Fully support the National Merchandising Team by actively participating in all Seed Pod or Pod meetings that apply to your categories, being vocal on all matters, so they fully understand the regional nuances of our division. This would include local item assortment, merchandising strategies, local programs/promotions, schematics, section sizes by store, competitive retails, etc.
  • Build and maintain a strong business relationship with the Partner community, Center Store Supervisors, store teams, fellow Asst. Grocery Sales Managers, and the members of the National Category Management team.
  • Collaborate with the Replenishment team to ensure the item selection and product mix provides the best cost and maximum turns. In addition, they also need to communicate with the appropriate buyer in a timely manner, so they fully understand the expectation at any given time.
  • Act consistent with United policies and procedures
  • Visit retail locations (United and competition) to understand category trends and pricing, while also monitoring compliance on key merchandising initiatives and shelf conditions.
