About The Position

The Assistant Port Manager is responsible for ensuring all operations and personnel are functioning properly with respect to customer relations, productivity, safety, and quality assurance. While maintaining a positive working relationship with the labor, the Assistant Facility Manager is to set the standard and be held accountable for a safe and efficient operation.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management.
5 years managing related union labor.
Valid CPR certificate required.
Must have valid DL.
Ability to manage a large, complex, and diverse workforce in a fast-paced environment.
Strong problem-solving skills to respond quickly and effectively to operational issues.
Requires the ability to plan and organize projects in a fast-paced environment and be available to work varied hours, shifts and days.
Requires the ability to communicate effectively with union workforce and other staff.
Ability to explain, express, defines and gives examples of ideas and operations.
Extensive rigging expertise, including load/stress and calculation skills.
Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations.
Proven leadership skills.
Experience with computerized operating systems.
Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired.
Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.

Responsibilities

Assist the Facility Manager with quote rates for potential business.
Communicating with the Port Authority on a daily basis.
Maintains a safe and efficient work environment, to include ensuring that all PPE is worn at all times and distributed for jobs that require additional PPE.
Ensures and maintains a drug and alcohol-free work environment.
Ensures and maintains a hostile free and discrimination free work environment.
Manages the availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of scheduled vessel operations, and that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as necessary with other required tasks in order to turn the vessel around within specific time.
Oversees superintendent and union represented personnel in proper operating procedures, and as needed will counsel, discipline and/or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation while working within the definitions of the labor agreement.
Plans, designs, and implements rigging arrangements.
Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries; Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
Responsible for learning, navigating and adhering to all union contracts.
Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor.
