About The Position

Assistant Nurse Manager – Emergency Department Location: Howard University Hospital – Washington, DC Role Summary The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) – Emergency Department supports clinical and operational leadership within a high-acuity, high-volume Emergency Department at a Level I Trauma Center . This role partners with the Nurse Manager to ensure the safe and effective delivery of patient-centered emergency and trauma care while maintaining operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and team engagement. As a frontline leader in a Level I Trauma environment, the ANM supports complex patient care coordination, rapid clinical decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration, and adherence to evidence-based emergency and trauma standards. In the absence of the Nurse Manager, the ANM serves in a leadership capacity to ensure continuity of care and operational oversight. Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain BSN within three (3) years of assuming ANM position if not already obtained.
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
  • Minimum two (2) years clinical experience in Emergency Nursing preferred.
  • Experience in trauma or high-acuity emergency settings strongly preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year supervisory or leadership experience required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • PALS certification required.
  • National specialty certification (CEN preferred) within one (1) year of hire.
  • Demonstrated leadership, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong knowledge of emergency care standards, trauma protocols, and patient safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Implement daily Emergency Department operations, aligning staffing and resources to patient acuity, trauma volume, and throughput demands.
  • Monitor triage effectiveness, EMS intake coordination, and trauma activation processes.
  • Supervise and coach nursing staff; assist with performance evaluations and improvement plans.
  • Support recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of emergency nursing staff.
  • Ensure compliance with EMTALA, trauma standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote evidence-based emergency and trauma nursing practice.
  • Support quality initiatives related to sepsis, stroke, STEMI, and trauma outcomes.
  • Facilitate communication between nursing staff, trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, EMS, pharmacy, and hospital leadership.
  • Address operational or clinical issues that may impact emergent care delivery in real time.
  • Report and escalate significant events, near misses, and patient safety concerns appropriately.
