About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a patient centered Assistant Nurse Manager to support our Quick Care Clinics. This position will provide managerial and clinical nursing leadership for clinical outpatient services at the Quick Care locations under the direction of the Walk-In Clinics Nursing Manager to assure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods, and resources to accomplish performance objectives. This position has some involvement in direct patient care as well as planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments. This position supports our clinics and will travel between clinics to provide continued support. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required and a Master's Degree in Nursing highly desired.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is require by date of hire.
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years recent experience in leadership/management with demonstrated skills in management and supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to meet the University Driving Policy Standards and availability to provide support to other clinical locations based on clinical need/hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 1-3 years outpatient, ER, or ambulatory care experience.
  • Knowledge of UI and UI Health Care policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience with development/implementation or evidence-based practice (EBP) standards.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam.

  • Assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.

  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by management.
  • Assists in matters of promotion, transfers and disciplinary action, as directed by management.
  • Coaches staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seek participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
  • Provides staff incentives/rewards for contributions towards achievement of service excellence.
  • Performance Management
  • Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
  • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Employee Labor Relations
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
  • Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.

  • Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations. Provide detailed job responsibilities.
  • Financial Management:
  • Actively help manage operating expenses by monitoring the unit/clinic’s operating budget.
  • Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies through participation in the development of the unit operating budget, reviewing staffing plan, reviewing service contracts, planning for new supply costs, etc.
  • Assists management in developing a staffing plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.
  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction:
  • Collaborate with management and UI Health Care Ambulatory Nursing department to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
  • Supply and Instrumentation management.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
  • Identifies inefficiencies in current practice/processes, demonstrates tolerance for change and develops a means to enhance the process.
  • Consistently makes sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
  • Creates and maintains a workplace of choice/ which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency; encourages staff to regularly establish goals and objectives toward career development.
  • Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
  • Supervise and occasionally provides care delivery and assists in coordinating patient care teams to maximize customer service and continuity of care.
  • Develops flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care, with assistance from leadership as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
  • Provide patient care as needed.
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  • Patient Care/Service Delivery:
  • Planning and Goal Management:
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Uses customer feedback in planning and providing service.
  • Communication/Collaboration Relationships:
  • Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
  • Utilizes human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to leadership.
  • Education Programs:
  • Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students.
  • Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate)
  • Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
  • Invests in own continuous learning and skill enhancement
  • Research Administration:
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
  • Supports changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice.
