About The Position

This person in this position is responsible for the operational management of the Recreation, Park Operations, and Administrative Divisions within the department.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration or related field; five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience demonstrating an effective understanding of recreation management, with extensive knowledge and skills to manage diverse programs and employees; or equivalent combination education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the organization, development, and maintenance of a comprehensive municipal park and recreation system;
  • Knowledge of budgetary procedures, bid law requirements, and general governmental finance;
  • Skill in using independent judgment and discretion;
  • Skill in oral and written communications;
  • Skill in prioritizing, scheduling and delegating assignments;
  • Skill in operating modern office equipment;
  • Ability to manage the financial activities of a park and recreation department, including long- and short-range planning and analysis, performance studies, and budget development;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and programs;
  • Ability to organize, instruct, and supervise employees;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective and courteous working relationships with staff, the general public and other City employees.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the department Director in the planning, development, and implementation of department-wide activities and operations;
  • Assists with budget preparation and proposals;
  • Represents the department Director at meetings or functions within the department, with other City departments, or with outside organizations;
  • Interacts and coordinates with residents, elected officials and other City departments;
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in planning organizing, initiating and supervising athletic programs;
  • Conducts and actively participates in scheduled sports and recreation programs for both children and adults;
  • Supervises the work of assigned recreation personnel and outside groups conducting recreation activities;
  • Enforces rules and regulations for the safety and welfare of staff and participants;
  • Solicits, trains and supervises volunteers for athletic/recreational programs;
  • Acts as liaison with other athletic organizations, clubs and special interest groups;
  • Keeps accurate records, takes inventory, schedules athletic staff and events, and conducts evaluations;
  • Assists in the development, recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the assigned recreation area(s);
  • Monitors the day-to-day operations of programs and events, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints and ensuring that programs and events have required materials and supplies;
  • Works with neighborhood community groups on matters of civic and recreation interest;
  • Coordinates schedules for various facilities including practice and game times and working with affiliated groups on facility rental; and
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
