Over the past 224 years, The Post has evolved into a multi-platform media company spanning print, digital, video, audio, app, television, and commerce. The New York Post is currently seeking an experienced PT Temporary Photo Researcher to to support its Alexa Magazine team. Alexa is published 10+ times a year in an upscale broadsheet format and inserted into the New York Post, Alexa showcases luxury lifestyle trends and celebrity exclusives. The ideal candidate is motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines with clarity and focus. Strong time-management and prioritization skills are essential, along with the ability to learn and retain new information quickly. Because we are a lean team, each person’s role is an important part of a well-oiled machine. We’re looking for someone who supports that structure—staying focused on their responsibilities while contributing reliably to shared workflows. Meticulous attention to detail, strong fact-checking habits, and consistent follow-through are essential. An editorial background is ideal, and a proactive, self-starter mindset is a must. The Assistant Photo Editor would support the Alexa Photo Editor and Photo Department as a whole on an as-needed basis. This is a technical, administrative, and production-support role, rather than a creative or design-based position. Flexibility required to work on an as needed basis, ranging from 1-5 shifts per week

Requirements

  • At least 2 years experience in editorial, photo research, asset management, or a related field
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to juggle multiple deadlines
  • Comfort working in fast-paced editorial environments
  • Strong research skills, knowledge of image licensing, and ability to work with current digital asset management systems, newsgathering and social media tools
  • Keen ability to multi-task, and independently problem solve: if something is not readily available, how else are you able to source it
  • Precise fact-checking habits and attention to detail for not only just images but also the captions and credits and other editorial documents you provide
  • Professional communication skills and reliability
  • Research and fact-check your work meticulously
  • Strong picture judgement and editorial intuition; organically pursue outside-of-the-box resources
  • Adobe Photoshop (basic color corrections, cropping, resizing)
  • Photo Mechanic or Bridge for high volume ingesting, captioning, and metadata tagging
  • Strong understanding of metadata fields, credits, and rights information
  • Experience maintaining shared drives, project folders, precisely organized file structures
  • Google Workspace
  • Ability to effectively batch rename, resize, and prepare images for color and layout workflows
  • Familiarity with photo agencies, archives, and sourcing best practices
  • Clear understanding of editorial usage rights and licensing basics

  • Interest in fashion, luxury, lifestyle, and entertainment is a plus, but core strengths must be operational and technical

Responsibilities

  • Photo Research & Asset Management
  • Conduct fast, accurate image research for Alexa Magazine and the wider Photo Department on an as-needed basis
  • Source photography from agencies, publicists, archives, internal databases, and direct outreach
  • Negotiate licensing and fees when needed, following department guidelines
  • Process high volumes of images with efficiency (batch renaming, resizing, metadata embedding, captioning, rights info). Per department workflow, basic color correction and simple crops are performed in this role. All advanced creative such as retouching, layout adjustments, and design-driven edits fall under the Art Department.
  • Ability to identify and flag images that require correction, retouching or compositing for the Art/Design teams, but not performing those edits independently.
  • Maintain the digital grid; create and update project folders; organize assets by production stage
  • Prepare tidy, accurate selects folders for color and credit workflows
  • Uphold editorial accuracy, rights compliance, and proper formatting in all delivered assets
  • Production & Administrative Support
  • Maintain clear, timely communication across multiple platforms and parallel projects
  • Participate as part of the Photo Department structure; while assigned to Alexa, any extra availability supports the PhotoDesk
  • Gather and fact-check photo credits for print, digital, and social platforms, upholding editorial accuracy and proper formatting in all delivered assets
  • Assist with Google Workspace tasks: callsheets, shared drives, decks, schedule updates, and file organization, with strong attention to detail in all prepared materials
  • Support the Photo Editor on shoots in a Production Assistant capacity (coffee runs, pickups, greeting arrivals, on-the-ground logistics)
  • Assist with HMU outreach, callsheets and general shoot logistics; arrange administrative details such as car services, catering, supplies.
  • Be onsite for final color-correction checkpoints before ship, identifying color inconsistencies and relaying precise, actionable feedback for internal corrections to the appropriate channels.
  • Contribute to our recurring “Cover Reveal” photo op, featured on our Instagram, by helping to ideate and capture a simple creative shot for each issue—this is a fun, contained creative assignment specific to this task and does not expand the role’s overall creative, editorial, or art direction scope.
