About The Position

Under general supervision of City Planner to perform professional level work in the field of current and/or long-range planning; provide information and assistance to developers and the public on planning related matters; provide technical and responsible support to the City Planner and Community Development Director.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree, with major course work in urban planning or a related field.
  • Experience: One year of directly related municipal planning experience is desirable.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Knowledge of: Principles and practices of urban planning and development.
  • Knowledge of: Recent developments, current literature, sources of information, and research techniques related to the field of urban planning.
  • Knowledge of: Modern office methods, practices, procedures, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of: Mathematical principles.
  • Knowledge of: Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Skill with: Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
  • Skill with: Operating a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to: Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to: Analyze and compile technical and statistical information and prepare routine reports.
  • Ability to: Prepare basic planning graphics including site plans and land use maps.
  • Ability to: Read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to: Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret social, economic, population, land use data, and trends; prepare written and graphic reports on various planning and environmental matters.
  • Conduct planning studies involving the correlation and assembly of information; participate in the preparation of charts, maps, and visual aids; compile information and make recommendations on special studies.
  • Prepare reports, projects, and meeting agenda items for the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Zoning Administrator, and the City Council; attend public hearings; advise the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Design Review Committee, and City Council on planning matters; confer with City officials and the public on City planning matters.
  • Enforce zoning ordinances, answer inquiries and complaints regarding their interpretation and applicability.
  • Review applications and plans submitted to the Planning Commission; provide advice regarding completeness and accuracy; develop and present recommendations on approval, denial, or modification of applications.
  • Assist and provide information to the public regarding the preparation and filing of all land use related applications including zone changes, land use map amendments, site plans, subdivisions, conditional use permits and other land use related requests; and accurately explain planning and zoning regulations to the public at the counter, by telephone, email, or letter.
  • Prepare specific recommendations for development standards, planning objectives, and evaluation criteria.
  • Represent the City in local and regional planning meetings and seminars, coordinate planning, growth, development, and other issues with other jurisdictions.
  • Conduct inspections on conditional use permits granted by the Planning Commission and Zoning Administrator to ascertain continued compliance to the conditions imposed.
  • Oversee, participate in, and coordinate special planning, zoning, and environmental studies; prepare reports and findings.
  • Serve as staff to a variety of commissions, committees, and groups; prepare the agenda and appropriate reports; make and present findings and recommendations.
  • Develop and present recommendations on development permits, special use permits, variances, tentative tract maps, residential planned development permits, and other zoning applications; prepare appropriate reports.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
