This posting is for an Engineer I position that will serve as the Assistant Resident Engineer in the Winston Salem Construction I office. The position will assist the Resident Engineer and the Senior Assistant Resident Engineer with contract administration. This position reviews and evaluates reports, contractor claims, contract plans, specifications, and permits, as well as performing field inspections. This position will write and review engineering documentation, attend project related meetings representing NCDOT, and review proposed and active highway projects. The position represents the Department on technical issues and advises the parties involved on the policies and specifications, and monitors construction activities for quality, safety, environmental protection, and project delivery. This position also provides engineering support to the Engineering Technicians, and contract inspectors. Will perform other duties as assigned. Position may be required to attend public meetings outside of normal business hours. Duties for this position also include the following: Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, public officials, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety-toed shoes required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Safety-toed shoes required.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional civil engineering as they apply to highway and traffic engineering and transportation planning
  • Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex projects
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff across the Department, other agencies, and the public
  • Experience training, planning, coordinating, and supervising the work of other employees
