The Assistant Scientist supports long-term, NSF-funded ocean biogeochemistry programs by leading essential laboratory operations and high-precision chemical analyses. The position ensures continuity of the Dissolved Organic Carbon Consensus Reference Material (DOC-CRM) program and supports NSF GO-SHIP observational commitments. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Assistant Scientist contributes to data interpretation and peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements

  • PhD in oceanography, marine chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field
  • At least 1 year of demonstrated experience with laboratory-based chemical analyses and data quality control

  • Experience with DOC and/or TDN analysis
  • Familiarity with federally funded or multi-institutional research programs

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-temperature combustion analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total nitrogen (TN) using Shimadzu TOC-L systems
  • Maintain analytical systems, troubleshoot instrumentation, and ensure rigorous data quality standards
  • Prepare, quality-control, and distribute DOC and TN consensus reference materials (CRM) used by the national and international oceanographic community
  • Coordinate shipboard seawater collections as Chief-Scientist, sample handling, and contamination-sensitive laboratory protocols
  • Coordinate with external expert laboratories for consensus analyses
