About The Position

The Vermont Division of Fire Safety is seeking a team-orientated individual with a strong background in building construction trades, blueprint reading/review, and building code enforcement to join our team as an Assistant State Fire Marshal in our Waterbury Regional Office. The primary assignment of this position will be conducting construction document review and permitting in an office setting. The candidate must be able to multitask efficiently and have strong computer and technical skills. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of the Regional Manager. Duties will include but are not limited to: Providing customer service to walk in customers Review, respond or delegate response to incoming emails and phone calls Provide code support to field-based fire inspectors Issue construction permits for a large variety of building systems and construction projects Review construction documents with design professionals from a wide variety of fields. Receives and reviews for completeness all permit applications for new construction and renovations of public buildings. This position will be office based with limited opportunities for remote or telework at the discretion of the supervisor. Incumbents must posses a valid drivers license and will be subject to a fingerprint supported background check as required for employment with the Department of Public Safety.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or above in engineering, architecture, electronics, environmental safety, industrial health, physical science, fire science or closely related field.
  • High School/Vocational diploma or equivalent AND EITHER three (3) years or more at or above a technical level in the areas of building trades/construction, architecture, fire, electrical, boiler, or plumbing inspection OR five (5) years or more of technical level experience in engineering, building trades/construction, health code, code/law enforcement or fire service-related fields.
  • Certification as a fire inspector or fire plans examiner from a recognized accreditation program.
  • All candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety, including a motor vehicle and criminal background investigation.
