About The Position

The Assistant Superintendent of Programs is responsible for initiating and implementing new methods and procedures to enhance the efficiencies of programs for their facility. The incumbent in this position monitors the daily functions of the facility to ensure orderly operations of Program areas and acts as Chief Administrative Officer in the absence of the Superintendent. This role is critical to the success of the facility and supervises a team of program managers, staff, and nurses. This position would be an excellent fit for someone with a passion for criminal justice reform and rehabilitation. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in criminal justice, education, psychology, social work, or a closely related social science.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience managing projects or people in a public or business organization with two (2) years of specific experience serving adolescents or young adults who are involved with the legal, child welfare, or behavioral health system.
  • Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass an IDJJ/IDOC drug screen.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24-hour ‘on call’ capacity.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and training to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers management experience within a juvenile justice secure facility or other residential setting.
  • Prefers management experience in a collective bargaining environment, specifically following a labor contract while managing staff.
  • Prefers experience delivering trauma-informed services to adolescents or young adults.
  • Prefers knowledge of juvenile justice best practices including community-based alternatives to incarceration, Prison Rape Elimination Act requirements, and strategies to reduce confinement.
  • Prefers knowledge of behavioral health care including adolescent brain development and trauma, crisis intervention, and individual and group skill-building modalities.
  • Prefers experience with 24/7 on-call and management of crises.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Assistant Superintendent of Programs.
  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • Reviews data to assist and confer with the Superintendent in establishing overall institution policies, facility budget preparation.
  • Monitors special programs.
  • Attends administrative staff meetings and conferences.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
