The Role Thornton Tomasetti’s Transportation practice is seeking a Bridge Inspection Assistant Team Leader to join our New York, NY office. You will support structural bridge inspection projects throughout the New York metropolitan area, with meaningful involvement in our NYSDOT Region 8 bridge inspection program. This hands-on role covers field inspections, data collection, report preparation, and repair recommendations in collaboration with experienced Team Leaders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years of bridge inspection and/or bridge design experience; FE exam passed or in progress preferred.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills, with ability to work effectively in the field and travel daily within the New York metropolitan area (including some early morning, night, and weekend work).
  • Detail-oriented and proactive, with interest in growing technical expertise; familiarity with AutoCAD and MicroStation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform highway, transit, and rail bridge condition inspections under the supervision of a Team Leader, including routine and in-depth inspections on the Region 8 program and other assignments.
  • Assist in preparing clear, well-organized bridge inspection reports, including condition documentation, ratings, and recommendations for repair and rehabilitation.
  • Review bridge and structure plans to help identify critical elements, fatigue-prone details, and fracture-critical members, and support the development of inspection procedures.
  • Coordinate inspection activities, including field logistics, traffic control coordination, access equipment, and subcontractor support.
  • Support structural analysis, load rating, and inspection coordination tasks, collaborating with CADD staff and junior engineers to ensure accurate documentation and deliverables.
