About The Position

The Assistant Underwriter – June 2026 Trainee participates in the Nautilus EDGE training program in the Scottsdale, Arizona office, gaining general insurance industry knowledge, exposure to commercial lines of business, and the important job functions of an Assistant Underwriter through classroom and practical instruction. The Training Program (first six months): • Attends all EDGE classes and events and completes homework assignments and projects.• Receives a passing grade (80% or higher) on all exams and quizzes.• Completes work assignments under manager supervision.• Builds general insurance industry knowledge, including all aspects of commercial lines of business and important job functions of an Assistant Underwriter.• Participates in formal classroom and on-the-job training, specific project work, field trips, and mentorship with members of the underwriting teams.• Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills while managing work items to gain a strong understanding of insurance and risk management concepts. The Assistant Underwriter Role (second six months): • Assesses and acts on new and renewal accounts to determine underwriting acceptability.• Assesses and acts on new and renewal accounts to determine proper policy issuance.• Provides administrative support by preparing and compiling reports.

Requirements

  • Strong reasoning ability, including defining and solving problems, drawing conclusions, interpreting data, and making connections.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build general insurance industry knowledge and understanding of commercial lines of business.
  • A strong academic record and a passion for the insurance industry.
  • Proficiency with computer programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business, or related fields; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
