About The Position

Performs work serving as an advocate or liaison for Veteran's and their dependents or survivors by collecting, organizing, and submitting local, state, and federal benefit, composing and distributing monthly newsletter to local organizations regarding veteran benefits, assisting with benefit related events, preparing and maintaining files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Veterans Services Officer.

Requirements

  • Required to be a Veteran as defined by Minnesota Statutes 197.447, a resident of Minnesota, and a citizen of the United States.
  • High School diploma or GED and moderate experience in veterans' service work or the military service where a knowledge of statutes and laws pertaining to Veterans is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of veteran's programs and benefits and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of community organizations, agencies and facilities related to veterans’ affairs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, symptoms, and occupational consequences of common disease and disabilities; particularly those where there is a presumed connection to service assignments.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and practices.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively present information on various benefit programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, co-workers, clients, veterans’ organizations, civic groups, and the general public.
  • Strong time-management skills, with the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, business and community representatives, government agencies, medical and social services organizations, military representatives, and the general public.
  • This position must maintain a proper working relationship with clients, many who have complex physical and mental health issues and come from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a regular and timely work attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, organizes, and submits claims on behalf of veterans, their dependents, or survivors with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota Department of veterans Affairs and any other applicable organizations.
  • Provides medical, military, and occupational research and analysis in order to prepare appropriate forms and reports to submit claims for veterans, their dependents or survivors.
  • Engages veterans, dependents and their families to effectively identify service needs and resources to promote effective outcomes for all stakeholders.
  • Acts as a liaison between local veterans’ organizations and the County Veterans Service Office (CVSO).
  • Participates in required training and certifications, attends workshops, seminars, and conferences and confers with professionals to maintain accreditations, credentialing and current knowledge of all Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Composes newsletter.
  • Participates in the annual Freedom Fest event at the County Fair; presents benefits information to Veterans’.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
