About The Position

The Associate Dean works under the general direction of the Dean of the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. The Associate Dean provides leadership for the internal operations of the College and oversight for academic programs, RSCA, faculty success, and student success as outlined below. The Associate Dean serves in the Dean’s capacity when Dean is absent. The Associate Dean helps to advance the strategic priorities of the College and the mission and vision of the University.

Requirements

  • Doctorate from an accredited institution in a field relevant to current or emerging disciplines within the College of Education or related areas.
  • Three to five years of administrative experience as department chair, program coordinator, or similar position.
  • Leadership skills and commitment to the vision, mission, and goals of the College and University.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice and an understanding of how to enact these values in policy and practice.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate respect, courtesy, civility, appreciation, empathy, trust, inclusion, and consultation.
  • Experience supporting the needs of diverse students and demonstrated expertise in closing opportunity gaps.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of students and faculty, especially students and faculty from historically marginalized communities.
  • Expertise in supporting recruitment and retention of diverse faculty.
  • Dedication to ensuring that we approach our work with students and communities with an asset-based mindset.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and supportive working relationships.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently problem solve and process improvements in a dynamic work environment, including regular incorporation of feedback.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse populations and avoids harassing and/or discriminatory behavior.
  • Thorough knowledge of the disciplines and programs represented in the Lurie College and the ability to plan, direct, and implement policies and programs with a commitment of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Ability to address complaints and resolve problems by working effectively within appropriate university structures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact well with different university constituencies, including faculty, staff, administrators, students, school districts, community partners, and alumni.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must also be able to perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must have achieved tenure or have a record to support tenure, based on effective teaching, scholarship, and service that merits appointment at the full professor level in the College of Education or similar discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and guidance to tenure-line and lecturer faculty through individual mentoring, coordination of faculty learning communities, and targeted workshops.
  • Supports the on-boarding of new faculty, including both tenure-line faculty and lecturer faculty.
  • Supports faculty in the college with the retention, promotion, and tenure process (RTP) in the College, including but not limited to RTO, Post-tenure review, and sabbaticals.
  • Oversees staffing and administration of college committees and college-wide elections.
  • Cultivates a culture of research within the college and highlights RSCA success internally and in the larger community through faculty forums, award nominations, college publications and social media, and community engagement.
  • Oversees all aspects of student success in the college, including, but not limited to: advising; student issues; improving graduation and retention rates, including elimination of equity gaps for underrepresented minority and Pell-eligible students; major and minor requirements; complaints; and grievances.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to the Lurie College Student Success Center.
  • Establish and maintain a strong working relationship that strengthens collaboration between chairs, faculty, and advising professionals in the center.
  • Administers the Lurie College Hardship Fund.
  • Oversees the process to award student scholarships.
  • Reviews student petitions and handles student concerns.
  • Facilitates and amplifies student RSCA activities through student research showcases, student RSCA grant funding and awards, collaboration with faculty.
  • In consultation with the Dean, provides support to faculty and staff engaged in outreach and recruitment, SAGE program advising, K16 pathway development, and teacher and counselor residency programs.
  • In consultation with the Dean, assists with strategic planning and provides leadership for college-wide initiatives aligned with the College’s Mission and Vision.
  • Assists the Dean with establishing and maintaining a professional, positive, collegial, collaborative, culture throughout the College.
  • Assists with management of all College programs, operations, and facilities.
  • In collaboration with the college curriculum committee, leads review of curriculum proposals, curriculum changes, and new program development.
  • Collaborates with the Dean, DRO, and department chairs to manage program and course enrollments.
  • Liaison with other departments and units to advocate for Lurie College students, faculty, and programs, including but not limited to: RSCA Advisory Council, Graduate and Undergraduate studies, Student Academic Success Services, and Academic Records, Registrar, Academic Technology.
  • Effectively represents the College in university-wide and inter-divisional settings.
  • Willingness to attend to safety and risk concerns, including those associated with facilities.
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
