About The Position

Episcopal High School is seeking an associate director of communications to join its four-person communications team, which is part of the School’s Advancement Office. This role actively partners with the director of communications in advancing the School’s strategic initiatives. The position is full-time, year-round, in-office, reporting to the director of communications, and is available beginning March 2026. Guided by its founding principles of honor, academic distinction, spiritual growth, and community, Episcopal High School is a 100% boarding school located in Alexandria, Va., serving 440+ students in grades 9-12. The communications team focuses on highlighting and celebrating the distinctive aspects of Episcopal and the achievements of its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. By fostering strong relationships and school pride, the communications team plays an integral role in engaging all members of the community to actively support the School’s mission and strategic priorities. Individuals with demonstrated skill in writing, graphics design, and website and brand management are encouraged to apply. Exceptional editing and writing skills, for both print and web, are essential, as are strong organization and communication skills, both written and oral. Attention to detail is vital, as is the ability to meet deadlines and manage projects efficiently. This role collaborates not only with the Communications and Advancement teams but also other offices across campus. The creation of compelling and fresh content is a high priority for the team, therefore attendance during some evening and weekend events is a requirement. The successful candidate will be motivated, energetic, creative, enthusiastic about joining a highly collaborative team, and excited to engage with a vibrant school community. As a staff position, this role does not qualify for on-campus housing.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, English, communications, marketing, or related field.
  • At least five years of relevant, full-time experience in independent schools, higher education, nonprofits, or a public relations or marketing office.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • A knack for building and maintaining relationships and the ability to communicate professionally and confidentially via phone, email, and in person.
  • Experience with web-content management systems.
  • Ability to master relevant, necessary technological tools and platforms.
  • Proven skills as a writer, editor, and proofreader.
  • Astute judgement and discretion in handling confidential institutional information.
  • High levels of initiative, with proven ability to work both collaboratively and independently and to manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Canva.
  • Graphic design experience

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing content for and maintaining the School’s website, serving as the School’s webmaster and primary content and data manager, ensuring accuracy of information and consistency of message to internal and external audiences by proactively collaborating with stakeholders across campus to create and update website content and design new webpages.
  • Manages the Constituent Communications Calendar and facilitates all-School broadcast emails.
  • Oversees alumni class notes in Episcopal’s award-winning alumni magazine.
  • Serves as a liaison between Communications and other departments across campus.
  • Assists with the production of print materials, including article writing and proofreading.
  • Actively covers School news for both web and print.
  • Supports collaborative efforts with the admissions office and other academic departments.
  • Updates content and design of the annual course catalog and registration guide.
  • Designs programs and invitations for special events and promotional catalogs/flyers as needed.
  • Works independently and within a team on special and ongoing projects and is available to staff special events in the evenings and weekends, as necessary.
