About The Position

Working at The Preservation Society of Newport County offers you the opportunity to work for an organization that preserves, protects and presents 13 historic properties and landscapes in Newport, Rhode Island. As part of the team, you have an opportunity to help preserve and maintain the cultural and historical treasure of Newport, Rhode Island. The Preservation Society of Newport County seeks Associate Guides to work within our house museums. Candidates are responsible for learning about our historic properties and the families who owned them. The Associate Guide serves as a knowledgeable and engaging representative of the Newport Mansions, providing guests with accurate, welcoming, and memorable experiences. The Associate Guide communicates effectively, supports operational procedures, and contributes to the overall quality and smooth operation of the Guest Experience. One weekend day is required. Shift lengths vary from 7-8 hours. Occasional special events may require work outside of this period.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and guest service skills; public speaking or presentation experience preferred.
  • Confident and proactive in engaging guests; able to initiate conversations and offer assistance.
  • Strong self-starter with the ability to work independently, multi-task, and establish priorities.
  • Ability to read, understand, retain and follow instructions, training materials, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to answer questions, provide clear guidance, communicate in a pleasant, clear and helpful manner, including modulating voice and directing guests efficiently in accordance with company standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable work.
  • Knowledge of Newport Mansions and the Newport area preferred, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.
  • Familiarity with Android and iOS mobile devices; comfort learning new technology preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and guest service skills; public speaking or presentation experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Newport Mansions and the Newport area preferred, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.
  • Familiarity with Android and iOS mobile devices; comfort learning new technology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of Newport Mansions, its house museums, historic families, and related programs to provide accurate, engaging information to guests.
  • Greet guests warmly and maintain a professional, courteous, and approachable demeanor at all times.
  • Provide helpful, accurate responses to guest questions or concerns, exercising sound judgment and problem-solving skills, and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Monitor guest activity and flow to ensure a safe, organized, and enjoyable experience.
  • Participate in team meetings, initiatives, and cross-departmental activities as appropriate for the role.
  • Support colleagues across operational areas by assisting guest needs and rotating through assigned duties.
  • Follow all operational procedures, safety protocols, and museum policies, including dress code and professional conduct.
  • Adapt to changing priorities, procedures, and tools while maintaining a positive and guest-focused attitude.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by seeking opportunities to learn, applying feedback, and supporting organizational initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support smooth operation and guest experience.
  • Follow prescribed safety and health rules, regulations, and practices.
