The Applications Engineering team drives forward the company’s mission by designing solutions around, installing and supporting Standard Bot’s innovative 6 axis robot. Notes: This role will be required to come into our Glen Cove robotics factory 5 days/week We're looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented engineer with a controls or industrial automation background who is excited about robotics. As an Associate Quality Engineer: Controls, you will apply your knowledge of PLCs, industrial communication protocols, and hardware integration to validate and test Standard Bots' robot systems in real-world automation environments. This role bridges the gap between traditional controls engineering and quality assurance. Ideal for someone who understands how industrial equipment communicates and wants to ensure our robots integrate seamlessly into customer automation cells.

Requirements

  • Technical Foundation: 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or a related field (or equivalent educational background in electrical/controls engineering, mechatronics, or automation technology).
  • Industrial Protocols: Working knowledge of PLC programming and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, & PROFINET
  • Electrical Fundamentals: Comfortable with basic DC wiring, reading electrical schematics, signal types (24V digital I/O, 4–20mA analog), and using test equipment (multimeters, etc)
  • Hardware Integration: Experience interfacing control systems with sensors, actuators, or robotic systems. Familiarity with relay logic, safety circuits, and motor drives is a plus.
  • CAD Proficiency: Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software for designing test fixtures, enclosures, and mounting hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotic systems (6-axis, SCARA, or collaborative robots)
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLC platforms
  • Basic scripting ability (Python, structured text) for test automation
  • Basic understanding of industrial safety standards (ISO 13849, ANSI/RIA 15.06)

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute test plans for robot integration with PLCs, HMIs, and other industrial control systems
  • Validate communication protocols including Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherNet/IP, Ethercat and digital/analog I/O interfaces
  • Build and maintain test fixtures for automated hardware testing, including basic AC & DC wiring, sensor integration, and signal verification
  • Test robot behavior in simulated and real customer environments involving conveyors, grippers, vision systems, and safety interlocks
  • Validate safety system integration (e-stops, safety PLCs, light curtains) to ensure compliance with industrial safety standards
  • Collaborate with applications engineering and field teams to reproduce customer-reported integration issues
  • Document test procedures, create wiring diagrams, and maintain test cell configurations
  • Review feature specifications for industrial usability and protocol compliance
  • Build and wire PLC cabinets and other test control systems to support automated test frameworks
  • Develop and maintain documentation for test setups, wiring diagrams, and fixtures to ensure reproducibility
  • Interpret and work from wiring schematics, diagrams, and technical drawings to build reliable test equipment
