About The Position

AMDA College of the Performing Arts, with campuses in New York City and Hollywood, is one of the foremost post-secondary performing arts colleges in the country. The Associate Technical Director is responsible for assisting with the daily technical operations of the Production Department, including drafting, lighting, sound, set design, construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. The Associate Technical Director will work in a demanding environment and is expected to think creatively and respond rapidly to a constant influx of demands. In this position, the ATD will assist in providing leadership and supervision for all activities pertaining to AMDA’s technical production team. The Associate Technical Director will be responsible for assisting in developing a highly motivated and collaborative technical production team, which includes carpenters, electricians, student workers, and all other technical production staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior experience as an Assistant/Associate Technical Director in the field of theatre production and/or experience managing a diverse team of technical production staff members.
  • Experience with Theatre Design & Technology (including CAD programs, Qlab, ETC lighting consoles, DANTE and digital audio systems), scenic construction and rigging.
  • Must have skills in drafting/carpentry.

  • Knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of stage, set, sound and lighting design and their implementation; stage management and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances, plan, develop, schedule, and provide the technical support required for each event or performance; design and construct sets; design lighting and sound and video systems as needed for each performance and oversee stage crews and student workers.
  • Excellent interpersonal leadership, organization, and communications skills (both written and oral).
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, sustained energy, and passion for the performing arts, along with the adaptability and experience needed to thrive amid changing demands and unpredictable workflows in an educational setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with operating, maintaining, and safeguarding the technical assets/equipment of the performance spaces.
  • Support advance planning for all technical requirements, including drafting, lighting, sound, staging, and specialty needs, for events and performances.
  • Work in collaboration with the SVP of Production, the Technical Director, the Production Managers, and the Executive Team as needed on the technical specifications, costs and usages of technical equipment required for individual productions and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Monitor the condition of production equipment, arrange for repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Attend technical week rehearsals to supervise and assist in all technical production elements including but not limited to lighting, audio and video support.

  • In conjunction with the Technical Director, supervise and assist with all technical production elements.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and assigning of tasks to production staff members and the training of student workers.
  • Lead, supervise, motivate, and inspire the technical production team.
  • Ascends and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps.
  • Adjust, lift, or move objects up to 50lb in all directions.
  • Operates machinery and/or power tools, motor vehicles, or heavy equipment.
