About The Position

The Fessenden School is an all-boys independent day and boarding school serving 540 students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 9 in West Newton, MA. The Athletic Trainer is a skilled, compassionate, and proactive health professional who supports boys in Grades 5–9 through comprehensive athletic health care and performance oversight. This individual plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of student-athletes while helping to cultivate resilience, accountability, and healthy habits. The Athletic Trainer leads and manages the School’s athletic training program, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, return-to-play protocols, and health education. Working closely with the Director of Athletics, coaches, the Health Center, families, and outside medical professionals, the Athletic Trainer ensures that athletic participation aligns with best practices in sports medicine and the School’s core values of honesty, compassion, and respect.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • Current ATC certification and licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Experience overseeing an athletic training program in a school or comparable setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, professionalism, and collaboration.
  • Successful criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • Experience working with middle school students.
  • Familiarity with best practices in strength and conditioning for adolescent athletes.
  • Prior experience in an independent or all-boys school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning for all student-athletes in Grades 5–9.
  • Develop individualized treatment and return-to-play plans in alignment with established medical protocols.
  • Make appropriate physician referrals and maintain communication with outside medical providers.
  • Coordinate concussion baseline testing, education, management, and return-to-play decisions.
  • Design and oversee a comprehensive athletic health care program that prioritizes safety, injury prevention, and long-term wellness.
  • Coordinate CPR, AED, and concussion awareness training for faculty and staff.
  • Promote best practices in strength training and supervise safety protocols in the fitness/weight room.
  • Educate students on injury prevention, hydration, recovery strategies, and responsible training habits.
  • Develop strong, trusting relationships with student-athletes that promote accountability and self-advocacy.
  • Partner closely with coaches to support athletes’ development while maintaining appropriate medical boundaries.
  • Maintain clear and proactive communication with families regarding injuries, recovery plans, and expectations.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Health Center regarding athletic injuries and follow-up care.
  • Coordinate athletic trainer coverage for all home games, tournaments, and special events.
  • Work collaboratively with the Athletic Department to support seasonal transitions and departmental initiatives.
  • Oversee and organize medical forms, emergency action plans, and permission-to-treat documentation.
  • Purchase, inventory, and maintain athletic training supplies and first aid kits.
  • Manage and adhere to the athletic training budget responsibly and efficiently.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional athletic training facility.
  • Model and reinforce the School’s core values of honesty, compassion, and respect in all interactions.
  • Help student-athletes navigate setbacks and injuries with resilience, integrity, and growth mindset.
  • Participate actively in school life, including meetings, professional development, and community events.
  • Support the broader mission of educating the whole boy — mind, body, and character.
