About The Position

The Autonomous Flight Safety Systems Engineer will support the SLS Program with design and development support of the Autonomous Flight Safety Subsystem (AFSS).

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Industrial, or Systems Engineering or related field is required.
  • Degree from an ABET accredited university preferred.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with minimum of 14 years of experience, a Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.
  • A general knowledge of launch vehicle design and interfaces, system design, system engineering and integration, critical thinking, troubleshooting and problem-solving experience with ground and/or flight hardware is required.
  • A working knowledge of flight avionics systems including EEE part grades, industry practices, and basic circuit designs and logic is required.
  • Experience leading and participating in design reviews, strategic planning, project scheduling and engineering planning is highly desired.
  • Excellent technical writing skills and the ability to deliver high impact technical presentations is required.
  • Strong communication skills with a desire to dive in and fully understand issues, concerns, and assess options are required.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS vehicle and interfaces.
  • An understanding of pyrotechnics and propulsion systems.
  • An understanding of Safety and Mission Assurance, hazard analysis, and risk management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support for the design and development of the AFSS.
  • Provides insight into AFSS contractor development and integration activities.
  • Coordinates between NASA and prime contractor teams to achieve broader AFSS objectives.
  • Provides structured design reviews consistent with NASA and MSFC standards.
  • Provide support for contract technical evaluations, technical directives, task order and contract performance.
  • Represent the SLS Program to communicate status and issues during the AFSS integration activities.
  • Support the SLS Level II requested Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), verification objectives and design certification reviews.
