About The Position

Assumes overall care of individual with intellectual/developmental disability. For some individuals, it will include low level medical care and for others it will not include any medical care at all. Duties may include: assuring the person’s safety; assistance with feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and mobility/ambulation; preparing food; housekeeping. For some individuals it will include medical care. For some it will include occasional local transportation.

Requirements

  • Methods of appropriate interaction with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. (Most of all must be willing to learn what you don’t know.)
  • Has ability to work independently most of the time; work effectively with individuals with intellectual /developmental disabilities and individuals from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Be responsible for an individual who might not be able to care or make appropriate decisions for him/herself.
  • Must work effectively with others
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Mastery of English language
  • Basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
  • Knowledge of PROMISE and Citrix software are helpful
  • Basic principles of social work
  • Typical office computer software
  • Ability to educate others effectively
  • Very good oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills that put people at ease
  • Network with professionals from other organizations in the best interests of the client and The Arc of York and Adams Counties
  • Obtain and integrate bits of information effectively

  • Skills/Requirements to perform tasks may include but not limited to: Must be able to lift and/or move at least 25 lbs
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, bend, twist, reach, extend, lift, and carry weights.
  • Frequently use hands to finger, handle, and reach with arms and hands below or at the waist level and above shoulder height.
  • Be able to pull, push, lift, or carry.
  • Be able to stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl.
  • Constantly be able to talk or communication, hear, taste, or smell.
  • Specific vision abilities may include close vision; color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Be exposed to all outside weather conditions (including but not limited to sun, rain, heat, cold, snow, etc.), dust, and fumes while working.
  • Noise is typical home environment
  • At minimum, a high school diploma or GED.

Nice To Haves

  • For some levels of care, a college degree or specific certification might be required.
  • Prefer some prior experience interacting with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Be present with the client at all times to ensure safety and security.
  • Assist client with the following as needed: feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting (includes accompanying client to bathroom, helping client sit on toilet, changing diapers/pullups, clean up; mobility/ambulation. Some individuals need little or no assistance.
  • Prepare food if necessary.
  • Do housework, cleaning, low level maintenance if necessary (homemaker/chore service workers only)
  • Transport client to appointments, shopping, visitations, social events, etc. as necessary.
  • Working with client to achieve specified goals using ISP goal planning. (habilitation service workers only)
  • Assisting client with other typical activities of daily living as requested.
  • Interacting and communicating with client’s family respectfully and in the client’s best Interests.
  • Complete and submit required documentation timely (i.e. progress notes, time sheets, expense reimbursement forms, updated proof of qualifications including but not limited to current driver’s license, vehicle insurance, professional certification/licensure.)
  • The employee is responsible for making the employer aware of the need for accommodation. The Arc will make accommodations to an extent possible. Accommodations cannot impact effectiveness of the employee and cannot cause undue business hardship to The Arc or its programs.
