About The Position

The Band Saw Operator plays a critical role in Altec’s manufacturing operations by safely and accurately cutting raw materials to required specifications in support of production and assembly activities. This position requires precision, consistency, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency in a fast-paced fabrication environment. The Band Saw Operator is expected to follow established procedures, maintain equipment, and work collaboratively with the shop team to meet production schedules and quality standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in manufacturing or machining is an asset.
  • Prior experience operating band saws or similar cutting equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, basic drawings, and measurements.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Physically capable of standing for extended periods and safely lifting or moving materials.
  • Solid understanding of shop safety practices and manufacturing best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Machine Setup & Operation Set up, adjust, and operate band saw equipment to cut metal and other materials in accordance with work orders, drawings, and specifications.
  • Select and install appropriate blades, adjust machine settings (speed, feed, and clamping), and verify proper alignment before cutting.
  • Monitor cutting operations continuously to ensure accuracy and identify any potential defects or equipment issues.
  • Quality & Accuracy Measure, mark, and inspect materials before and after cutting using appropriate measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, micrometers, etc.).
  • Ensure all cuts meet required tolerances and specifications, escalating discrepancies to supervisors as needed.
  • Maintain a high level of workmanship and attention to detail to minimize rework and material waste.
  • Material Handling & Production Support Safely load, secure, and position raw materials and finished components for cutting and subsequent processing.
  • Support workflow in the shop by ensuring materials are properly labeled, organized, and staged for the next production step.
  • Work closely with machinists, welders, and other production personnel to meet daily and weekly production targets.
  • Maintenance & Housekeeping Perform routine machine maintenance, including blade changes, lubrication, and cleaning, to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with Altec’s safety policies and 5S principles where applicable.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or maintenance needs in a timely manner.
  • Safety & Compliance Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and training requirements.
  • Consistently wear and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Actively participate in safety initiatives, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement efforts within the shop.
  • Documentation & Reporting Accurately document production output, material usage, and any quality issues in designated systems or logs.
  • Communicate progress, delays, or concerns to supervisors as they arise.
