ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Barn Attendant & Equine Specialist will weigh and feed hay, special grains and supplements to horses, clean dirt/shavings based stalls, dump, clean and re-fill water buckets, distribute bedding to stalls, hand walk, and turn out horses and ride. Keep barn organized and clean, assist in maintaining all program areas to be clean and safe. Administer medication, keep inventory; such as feed, supplements and supplies. Assist program manager with training and exercising of the horses in the program including desensitization, documentation, socializing and problem solving. Must understand the unique needs of the environment when exercising horses. Must be comfortable with both English and Western tack. Assist department leaders in recruiting horses for the program. Understand the differences in program horses and be able to evaluate suitability for the program. Must be familiar with working with horses to prepare them for special circumstances, such as the mounting ramp. Assist instructors, volunteers, and program manager with horses before, during, and after lessons. Including but not limited to: grooming and tacking, lunging and riding as needed. Oversee the care of the horses, including, but not limited to bathing and clipping. Prepare horses for and assist in lessons with volunteers as needed. Assist with equipment, machinery, and building maintenance.
