About The Position

Perform avoidance and deterrence services while in various local or remote terrain settings where wildlife is present. Bear Guards shall be prepared to move individuals out of harm’s way prior to taking defensive deterrence actions. The Bear Guard should be able to use sound judgement to determine when is best to utilize non-lethal versus lethal deterrence measures and follow state guidelines and company prcedures.

Requirements

  • Possesses a high school diploma or GED. Must be able to read, write and converse fluently in English
  • Familiarity with a 12 gage pump action shotgun
  • Consistently and accurately shoots a target from a minimum of 25 yards
  • Must attend a 8-hour Wildlife Awareness and Gun Proficiency class
  • Ability to pass a background check to carry firearms
  • Ability to pass a drug screen
  • Ability to assemble, disassemble, and clean firearm
  • Must be fit for service at all times while in workplace
  • Experience recreating, hunting or working in the Alaska “backcountry” or wilderness
  • This position requires the ability to be able to walk and be on their feet for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift loads weighing up to approximately 50 lbs
  • Must have 20/20 corrected vision

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of in-the-field first responder aid and/or CPR
  • Comfortable camping or living in rustic accommodations in Alaska’s backcountry

Responsibilities

  • Pays constant attention to surroundings and work situations while creating and maintaining a safe work environment
  • Works well in a multi-disciplined team environment
  • Safely handles a firearm and is able to use it at a moment’s notice for wildlife deterrence
  • Able to make good decisions while staying unemotional
  • Responsible for daily care of weapon and ammunition
  • Writes reports of wildlife sightings/interactions and submits to supervisor
  • Willing to fly in small aircraft and helicopters, or other means of transportation as needed to access work sites
  • Possesses basic survival skills and the ability to navigate using GPS, compass or maps
  • Communicates as needed via satellite phones, inreach, SPOT and radios as determined
