About The Position

Camp Shalom at the Mandel JCC of the Palm Beaches is looking for talented, passionate individuals to join us and commit to giving our campers their best summer ever! Ultimately, you're doing your job if campers are having fun, and their safety and well-being are the priority at all times. The main focus of a Behavior Support Specialist is to work closely with the Inclusion Team and Camp Leadership to provide proactive, research-based behavioral support for campers who need additional assistance. This role requires strong observation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to implement and support individualized behavioral strategies in a camp setting. Work is generally June – August, Monday – Friday, as directed by the summer camp schedule each year. Look below for some specific responsibilities and expectations of this position:

Requirements

  • A LOVE for working with children and having fun!
  • Some college experience is required.
  • Ability to speak fluent English, understand it as well as read and write.
  • Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 75 lbs.), bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, and sitting.
  • Must possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to keep track of multiple campers and to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  • Effective and clear communication is essential between campers and staff.
  • Ability to complete written paperwork such as notes home, incident reports, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal or informal childcare experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous youth group or camp experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Observe campers in both group and individual settings to identify behavioral strengths, challenges, and triggers.
  • Collect data and monitor patterns related to camper behavior to help determine the function of behaviors.
  • Support the implementation of behavior plans through modeling, coaching, and ongoing feedback to counselors and staff.
  • Provide in-the-moment behavioral support to campers to promote emotional regulation, positive social interactions, and successful participation in camp activities.
  • Assist in training and supporting camp staff in the consistent implementation of behavioral strategies and intervention plans.
  • Supplement and support existing behavioral initiatives and Positive Behavior Support systems within the camp environment.
  • Communicate regularly with Inclusion staff and leadership regarding camper progress, concerns, and recommended adjustments to interventions.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by promoting proactive strategies, de-escalation techniques, and positive reinforcement.
  • Document observations, interventions, and outcomes as required, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Attend camp orientation, staff meetings, trainings, and consultations as required.
  • Be prepared to respond calmly and effectively in crisis or high-stress situations, following camp protocols and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with counselors, specialists, and leadership to ensure a cohesive and inclusive camp experience for all campers.
  • Maintains adherence to all company policies and procedures, including agency safety requirements.
  • Request safety-assistance devices, including requesting additional assistance before moving or lifting any excessively heavy and/or awkward objects.
  • Performs additional duties as agreed upon by the supervisor and based on camp needs
