About The Position

The Precision Bench Hand performs precision deburring, chamfering, touch-up, and finish operations on a wide variety of metal and non-metal parts using hand and power tools. This role requires the ability to work from ordinary prints and drawings, use simple gauges, and apply a high degree of care to maintain specified finishes, radii, contours, and dimensions. Work is performed on materials of various hardness such as stainless steel, carbon or alloy steel, cast iron, brass, bronze, aluminum, magnesium alloys, and similar materials. The position requires sustained physical effort, continuous mental and visual attention, and strict adherence to safety practices.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hand and power tools including handi-grinders, rotary files, stones, hand files, scrapers, emery cloth, crocus cloth, rubberized abrasives, and similar tools to remove burrs, sharp edges, and to form chamfers and radii to specified finishes on parts of various materials and hardness.
  • Perform precision deburring and chamfering on difficult spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worms, splines, keyseats, and similar parts where a high degree of skill is required to maintain uniformity of shape and contours and proper chamfers and radii, while avoiding removal of excessive stock or damage to finished surfaces.
  • Finish burr and protect thread integrity on difficult screw threads, lead screws, and other threaded forms, exercising extreme caution to prevent damage to thread form, thread angles, and to avoid burning or marring finished surfaces.
  • Deburr and blend odd shapes such as cage or pot-type parts, tubes, and parts with difficult contours and “hard-to-get-at” areas, finishing to exacting dimensions and fine finishes while preventing part damage.
  • Perform routine rework operations, including those required prior to processes such as shot peening, ensuring parts meet required specifications before subsequent operations.
  • Interpret ordinary prints and drawings and apply information using simple fixed gauges, contour gauges, and scales to verify radii, chamfers, and other dimensions as required.
  • Maintain quality and uniformity of work by continuously checking dimensions, surface finishes, and contours, and adjusting grinding pressures and tool application as required.
  • Follow safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment such as goggles and masks when working in continuous exposure to dust and particles from grinding wheels and workpieces.
