About The Position

Billing and Coding Specialist is responsible for accurate coding, charge entry, claims submission, payment posting, and follow-up for a busy outpatient neurology practice. This role ensures compliance with payer regulations, maximizes reimbursement, and supports the financial health of the practice through detailed knowledge of neurology-specific coding, including E/M services, diagnostic testing, and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of medical billing and coding experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines.
  • Familiarity with neurology-specific procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and practice management systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder) through AAPC or CCS certification through American Health Information Management Association preferred.
  • Prior experience in neurology or a related specialty strongly preferred.
  • Experience billing Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance plans.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient neurology services.
  • Review provider documentation to ensure appropriate code selection and compliance.
  • Code and bill services including (but not limited to): Office and outpatient E/M services EMG/NCS studies EEG interpretations Botox injections for migraine and movement disorders
  • Ensure proper modifier usage (e.g., -25, -59, -26, -TC).
  • Work closely with providers to clarify documentation when needed.
  • Prepare and submit electronic and paper claims in a timely manner.
  • Monitor claim rejections and denials; research and resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Submit corrected claims and appeals as needed.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits when required.
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer policies.
  • Post insurance and patient payments accurately.
  • Reconcile EOBs and ERAs with submitted claims.
  • Identify underpayments and initiate follow-up with payers.
  • Monitor aging reports and pursue outstanding claims.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers to resolve claim issues.
  • Assist with patient billing inquiries when necessary.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.
  • Stay current on coding updates, neurology billing changes, and payer guidelines.
  • Assist with audits and internal compliance reviews.
  • Generate billing and revenue cycle reports as requested.
