About The Position

Our work takes place both inpatient and outpatient supporting patients throughout their entire pregnancy (prenatally, at delivery, and postpartum). Birth Doulas will work in the outpatient setting to provide prenatal and postpartum support to around 10-15 assigned clients. They will also be on-call on a rotating basis to support patients during labor and delivery at UPMC Harrisburg. You will provide compassionate doula support to pregnant individuals by attending births in hospitals or birth centers and offering continuous physical, emotional, and informational care throughout labor and delivery. You will also conduct postpartum visits for patients during their hospital stay as needed. You must maintain consistent communication with community doulas and participate in the on-call rotation following attended births. Collaborating closely with the doula team and program staff, you will coordinate on-call schedules, participate in monthly staff meetings, and engage in ongoing professional development and continuing education. The teams are very supportive of each other and look out for each other’s well-being. We have great mentors for members of the team helping them grow in both their doula and professional skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Position requires high degree of planning, flexibility, organization, listening, motivating, and community networking.
  • UPMC approved Doula training within 6 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • BA or BS preferred.
  • Experience working in the community, especially with women and families preferred.
  • Multiple languages preferred.
  • Previous doula training/experience is preferred.
  • Direct patient care experience can also be beneficial
  • UPMC approved Doula training or Postpartum Doula preferred

Responsibilities

  • Commit to a minimum of four scheduled 12-hour on-call shifts per month.
  • Provide continuous doula support in alignment with DONA international Standards of practice and Code of Ethics.
  • Review each attended birth with the Supervisor, Lead Doula, or assigned Community Doula according to Birth Circle protocol.
  • When a client is not assigned prior to birth, complete the review with the designated follow-up doula.
  • Participate in individual case-management meetings with the lead Doula as needed to ensure timely and accurate documentation.
  • Follow established protocols for after-hours and weekend calls, coordinating with the on-call supervisor, answering service, and community doula for clients whose births you will attend.
  • Complete the initial postpartum visit before the patient is discharged.
  • Provide informed breastfeeding support and refer clients to lactation services when appropriate.
  • Document all patient interactions in the electronic health record within 24 hours
  • Submit timesheets according to schedule.
  • maintain strict patient confidentially and ensure all records comply with HIPAA standards.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings, including monthly Birth Doula meetings and new doula orientation.
  • Check UPMC email regularly for updates, on-call changes, and staff communication.
  • Perform duties in alignment with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.
