About The Position

The Athletic Coach provides strategic leadership, technical instruction, and holistic mentorship to student-athletes within the Framingham High School athletic program. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Coach is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and competitive environment that prioritizes student-athlete health, academic success, and character growth. By delivering high-quality instruction and maintaining high expectations for sportsmanship, the Coach serves as a vital mentor in the development of resilient, responsible citizens. This role ensures that the athletic experience is an extension of the classroom, where discipline, teamwork, and inclusive excellence are at the forefront of the student-athlete experience. This commitment aligns with Framingham Public Schools’ high expectations for achievement, equal access to culturally responsive, quality instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and a sense of belonging for all subgroups within our schools.

Requirements

  • Must possess or be willing to obtain MIAA-required coaching certifications , including CPR/First Aid and Concussion Training.
  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2–4 years of successful experience in playing and/or coaching the specific sport beyond high school graduation.
  • Apply knowledge of current research, sport-specific theory, and effective coaching methodologies.
  • Demonstrate strong teaching and leadership skills to foster both individual athlete development and cohesive team dynamics.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms; effectively present information and respond to questions from student-athletes, parents, and the general public regarding team policies, schedules, and expectations.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret athletic regulations and technical procedures.
  • Use data-driven insights to evaluate player performance, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to inform strategic game and practice decisions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and respond to medical emergencies, including the application of First Aid, CPR, and concussion protocols.
  • Maintain a calm, professional demeanor during high-stress situations or environmental changes.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, caregivers, staff, and the community.
  • Work with student-athletes of diverse backgrounds in an equitable, inclusive, and culturally proficient manner that promotes a sense of belonging.
  • React professionally and objectively to unpredictable situations, such as behavioral issues or game-day pivots.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance at all practices and competitions, modeling a proactive and solution-focused approach.
  • Work independently to prioritize tasks and manage logistical demands, including equipment inventory, facility scheduling, and transportation coordination.
  • Perform duties with strict awareness of MIAA Rules and Regulations , district requirements, and state laws.
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records, including student eligibility and medical clearances, in accordance with FERPA and district policy.
  • Operate and acquire skills in computer software, including Google Workspace, and utilize athletic-specific technology or video analysis tools to facilitate student learning and performance improvement.

  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct training and guidance to athletes, focusing on the mastery of sport-specific skills and performance improvement.
  • Identifies the unique strengths of players and utilizes diverse coaching styles to build athlete confidence and resilience.
  • Models and enforces high standards of sportsmanship, antiracism, and civic responsibility in all athletic activities.
  • Supports the educational potential of athletes by reinforcing the importance of academic proficiency and time management.
  • Develops and executes a regular practice schedule that balances individual skill development with cohesive team strategy.
  • Continuously assesses and evaluates athlete performance during training sessions and competitive games to inform instructional adjustments.
  • Advises and guides athletes on essential health topics, including nutrition, injury prevention, and the proper use of specialized sports equipment.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Athletics to schedule facilities and coordinate transportation for practices and competitions.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of all athletes by adhering to district health protocols, including concussion management and medical emergency procedures.
  • Oversees the proper care, maintenance, and inventory of all equipment, supplies, and uniforms in compliance with district requisitioning procedures.
  • Executes all coaching duties in strict accordance with MIAA regulations , state and federal laws, and Framingham Public Schools policies.
  • Maintains appropriate and confidential records regarding student eligibility, medical clearances, and performance data.
  • Establishes and maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with parents/guardians, school staff, and the broader Framingham community.
  • Delivers clear and professional communication regarding team expectations, schedules, and student progress to all stakeholders.
  • Engages athletes from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in a manner that reflects high cultural proficiency and inclusive excellence.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development and coaches’ meetings to stay current with evolving athletic standards and safety research.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
