About The Position

This position is responsible for maintaining the department’s bridge load ratings on the state highway system; and performing the structural engineering analysis of state-maintained structures required for permit overloads, capacity ratings, and load restrictions of deficient bridges or closure of structures.Essential Functions Determines the safe load carrying capacities for all state-maintained structures. Reviews structural ratings and recommendations made by in-house staff and consultants. Ensures all load rating information is up to date within the Illinois Structure Information System (ISIS) and a Structure Load Rating Summary (SLRS) and all supporting calculations and notes are saved and readily accessible. Manages American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)Ware software, including trouble shooting and development. Provides engineering expertise in review and analysis of permit overloads to the Bureau of Operations and construction overloads to the Bureau of Project Implementation. Provides structural engineering analysis for the district’s resurfacing projects. Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinates and consultants to ensure a well-developed and competent staff who comply with all departmental safety rules and practices. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Occasional statewide travel with overnight stays.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in structural engineering in the areas of design, planning, repairs, inspection, and rating of bridge structures, three years of which should have been supervising engineering functions.
  • Management and supervisory experience.
  • Current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Bridge Inspection Certification of Program Manager or Team Leader in the state of Illinois.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Knowledge of the Manual for Bridge Evaluation, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Structural Services Manual, and Illinois Structure Information and Procedures (SIP) Manual.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
