About The Position

This role involves handling and installing CAT5 and CAT6 low‑voltage cabling within a data center environment. Technicians will install cable on mounted trusses, J‑hooks, and strut systems to connect equipment and servers. Work may take place on elevated surfaces such as ladders and scissor lifts and may require overhead fall protection. Shifts can range from 10–12 hours depending on project demands, averaging 50–60 hours per week. Weekend work may occasionally be required on a case‑by‑case basis. A Communications Technician I is an entry‑level role, ideal for candidates with 0–1 year of experience in the structured cabling or low‑voltage industry. This position provides hands‑on exposure and the opportunity to grow within a technical installation team.

Requirements

  • Ability to work indoors or outdoors in active construction environments.
  • Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and from ladders.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, read small print, and identify audible signals.
  • Must be able to travel within the assigned territory as needed.
  • Self‑motivated with a positive, professional demeanor.
  • Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities.
  • Ability to read, write, and provide clear verbal communication.
  • Willingness to learn and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Install work‑area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture, and walls.
  • Route cable down walls using fish tape or similar tools.
  • Run cable through modular furniture.
  • Perform pre‑termination tasks: organizing, dressing, forming, and labeling cables; determining correct cable length and slack.
  • Properly suspend and support cabling using trays, J‑hooks, D‑rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems.
  • Build and install backboards, racks, patch panels, cross‑connects, and fiber hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as needed.
  • Conduct fire‑stopping procedures, including installing sleeves and pulling cable through penetrations.
  • Terminate low‑voltage devices and ensure proper functionality.
  • Complete all project paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, etc.).
  • Adhere to company, customer, and industry quality and safety standards.
  • Support additional duties as assigned.
