About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Site Supervisor, the camp counselor is responsible for the planning, organization and leading of activities for their group of campers in cooperation with other staff members.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Must have experience or skills supervising children
  • Possess the knowledge and skills of planning, organizing and leading activities

Responsibilities

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Park District’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner.
  • Use appropriate and positive discipline and language with program participants and staff.
  • Attend all staff meetings the Recreation Supervisor and the Site Supervisor schedule, including all staff trainings.
  • Be on time and prepared for camp each day.
  • Plan and write a lesson plan for each week. It must be handed in for approval on Tuesday of the previous week.
  • Notify the Site Supervisor as soon as possible of any health or safety hazards, overwhelming discipline problems or complaints.
  • Notify the Site Supervisor immediately of any accidents.
  • Fill out an accident/incident report and turn it into the Site Supervisor.
  • Make sure the Camp Coordinator & Recreation Supervisor has been notified of any accidents.
  • Exhibit quality leadership and be a good role model.
  • Be fair and consistent in maintaining discipline.
  • Have a positive attitude.
  • Wear staff shirt and name tag every day.
  • Wear one piece bathing suit on swim days.
  • Wear appropriate shoes (gym) and clothing daily.
  • Cooperate and communicate with co-staff and administrative staff in a positive manner.
  • Maintain a courteous, polite and mature attitude when dealing with the public and participants.
  • Make sure all equipment is put away neatly and promptly after use. Any equipment damages, supplies needed and shortages should be reported to the Site Supervisor, Camp Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor.
  • Help set up campsite at the start of summer and clean up at the end of the summer.
  • Must wait until all campers have been picked up before leaving.
  • Must participate in all camp activities (Parent Night, etc.)
  • Participate in all activities with campers (play games, swim in pool, assist campers with crafts, etc.)
  • Carry out other duties assigned by the Site Supervisor, Camp Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor.
  • Conduct instructor/child confidentiality (refrain from discussing a child or child’s abilities or behavior with another parent).
  • Obey the safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the safety program of the River Trails Park District.
  • If under the age of 18 a counselor may be placed with a co-counselor. Therefore working well with others and demonstrating leadership qualities are a must.
