About The Position

The Rising Rookies Camp Leader oversees the daily operations of the Sports Camp, which consists of approximately 60 campers ranging from grades 1-4. The Camp Leader supervises counselors, coordinates activities, maintains attendance and incident records, and ensures a safe, engaging environment for campers.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years of experience at a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education with a major in Recreation, Education or related field.
  • Prior Camp experience.
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or be able to earn within 60 days.
  • Working knowledge of a camp program and activities

  • Required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, twist, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tool, or controls and reach with hands and arms.

  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities are required and include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day to day operations of assigned camp by interacting with camp staff and campers.
  • Fill in for missing staff and take a group when necessary.
  • Oversee and ensure quality production of camp staff.
  • Prepare and submit lesson plans and supply requests per timeline set by Recreation Services Manager
  • Understand principles, practices, and objectives of community recreation.
  • Demonstrate ability to supervise children in a recreational setting.
  • Assist staff to plan and implement a variety of recreational activities.
  • Maintains daily attendance records and place phone calls home for any missing campers that have walk slips and/or are scheduled to attend off-site trips.
  • Serve as a resource to camp staff.
  • Assist staff in coaching through issues.
  • Meet regularly with camp counselors from assigned camp.
  • Attend daily staff meetings and actively participate and contribute.
  • Work with camp counselors to inventory and ensure all supplies and equipment are available.
  • Follow up on all accident and incident reports from assigned camp.
  • Serve as the liaison to camp staff, parents, Camp Director, and Recreation Services Manager.
  • Communicate regularly with the Camp Director regarding the camp operation.
  • Monitor camp counselors.
  • Assist in the planning and presenting of pre-camp training for assigned camp
  • Assist Camp Coordinator with staff evaluations.
  • Assist camps with shut down and clean up procedures.
  • Attend all planned camp special events and staff outings.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work and safety rules.
  • Employee must use good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position.
  • Work as scheduled.
  • Participates in the required training and safety programs as established by the Wheeling Park District.
