About The Position

The Western Washington University Police Department (WWUPD) is a fully commissioned Police Department and has the exclusive responsibility to act upon law-enforcement matters and performs police functions for its Bellingham main campus 24 hours a day. Campus Police Officers have the responsibility for enforcing campus regulations and local, state, and federal laws. Incumbents have arrest powers and must be commissioned law officers under the state's regulations. The University Police Department practices positive community and coworker engagement and creating a culture of care and open accountability. Officers must demonstrate excellence in emotional intelligence, positive morale, continuous quality improvement and friendly customer service. WWUPD has 14 Commissioned police officers who patrol and protect our campus community. Our department's primary jurisdiction is 220 acres which includes a population of 14,747 students and 3,660 faculty/staff members. Western Washington University is in the City of Bellingham and has 95,960 residents. WWUPD Police Officers are general authority peace officers and are commissioned through the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC). Police Officers complete the Basic Law Enforcement Academy through the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. We are seeking individuals interested in a career serving a diverse university community as an entry level police officer. Our Police Officers can expect to interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Officers have opportunities to work in specialty positions. Officers in these positions work with Bellingham Police Departments SWAT, Whatcom County Special Events Team, Evidence room, Field Training Officer, and instructor. The WWUPD has instructors for the following areas: Firearms, Patrol Tactics, Taser, Defensive Tactics, and EVOC.

Requirements

  • 21 years of age
  • Legally allowed to work in the US
  • Able to pass physical ability test prior to hire and throughout the Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA)
  • Valid driver's license
  • No record of felony convictions
  • Experience as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer in WA State or have the ability to obtain a WA State Commission through the Washington State Equivalency Academy upon hire.
  • Entry level applicants MUST also complete the process for WWUPD through Public Safety Testing for their application to be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Accredited Associate's degree or 90 undergraduate credit hours OR equivalent education/experience
  • Previous positive working relationships with diverse community members, including young adults (18-24 years old), people of color, LGBTQ people, and others from marginalized groups
