About The Position

The Cardiac Anesthesiologist will be primarily responsible for the provision of the complete range of anesthesia care to patient presenting for cardiac surgery and minimally invasive cardiac structural cases performed in the catheterization laboratory or as needed. The Cardiac Anesthesiologist will provide anesthesia care to patients presenting for non-cardiac surgeries and procedures, conduct education, resident’s training, and quality assurance projects per the needs of the Anesthesiology service.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Doctorate Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university
  • Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment.
  • Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency
  • Board Certification or Board Eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (AMA) and must obtain Board Certification two years after starting employment
  • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • Must hold advanced peri-operative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) Certification through the National Board of Echocardiography
  • Cardiac and Thoracic Anesthesiology clinical experience
  • Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients
  • Strong working knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management; participates in the development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies, and standards essential to the delivery of quality anesthetic care
  • Proficiency in the safe administration of blood and blood products ensuring that all protocol is followed
  • Excellent interpersonal, strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish rapport with families
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work daily hours, take 1st call (in-house), as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and cardiac calls based on O.R
  • Ability to build relationships within the organization and to represent CCH with appropriate outside agencies

  • Ability to exercise discretion and make wise decisions
  • Excellent teaching and mentoring skills in clinical anesthesia for Oral Surgery residents, Anesthesia residents, and interns

  • Sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and in dealing with patients, family members, trainees, and CCH staff of diverse backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Provides complete range of anesthesia care to all cardiac patients when needed, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring and post anesthetic care in compliance with The Joint Commission standards.
  • Provides Anesthetics and all anesthesia related procedures for Cardiac, thoracic, and minimally invasive cardiac Cath lab cases.
  • Provides Transesophageal Echo imaging and interpretation during cardiac cases.
  • Provides cardiac and general anesthesia related care throughout the Cook County Health (CCH) hospitals in all functional areas including the Operating Room, Obstetrics, PACU, ICU Wards and any other clinical settings as needed while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.
  • Works independently, participates in training residents, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
  • Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic test to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures.
  • Coordinates work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNAs, medical technicians and health care providers.
  • Administers anesthetics during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC) methods.
  • Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures.
  • Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery.
  • Determines when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be admitted to Intensive care unit or discharged home after surgery.
  • Works daily hours, takes 1st call (in-house), 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on the operating needs including cardiac calls.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
