About The Position

The Carpenter performs skilled construction, installation, and repair work to support the operational needs of the University of Arkansas. This position is responsible for tasks including hanging doors, framing and building walls, hanging sheetrock, installing Formica surfaces, and installing and securing cabinets with accuracy and craftsmanship. As an essential employee, the Carpenter helps maintain safe, functional, and reliable campus facilities, ensuring continuity of operations and supporting the university’s mission to provide a high‑quality environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Duties include reading and interpreting blueprints, selecting appropriate materials, operating carpentry tools and equipment safely, and completing projects in compliance with university standards and building codes. The Carpenter must demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. This role requires the ability to work collaboratively and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other departments, contributing to a positive team environment and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and to a high standard. This job is classified as weather essential. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • Carpenter I: (entry rate of $52,181 commensurate with education and experience)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least five or more years of experience performing professional carpentry work in construction, maintenance, or a related field
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Carpenter II: (entry rate of $57,399 commensurate with education and experience)
  • High School Diploma
  • At least seven or more years of experience performing professional carpentry work in construction, maintenance, or a related field
  • Experience leading projects and driving them to successful completionValid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, ADA accessibility requirements, and industry best practices related to carpentry and construction
  • Skilled in the safe use of carpentry tools, equipment, and materials
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical documents

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, vocational training, or technical certification in carpentry or a related skilled trade
  • Experience working in a university, government, or other large‑scale campus or multi‑building setting
