Requirements

High school diploma/GED required; no experience needed.
Grandfathered technicians without certification must complete 10 hours of annual continuing education; certified staff must complete 10–12 hours per certifying body requirements.
New hires in PA and NY must obtain certification within 18 months (MD excluded).
Must be able to stand for full shifts and lift/push/pull up to 35 lbs.
Accepted certifications: Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA).
Act 34 clearance required.

Nice To Haves

Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Tech/Sterile Processing program or 1 year of UPMC experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Follow all sterile processing, decontamination, infection control, and safety standards.
Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and sterilize instruments and equipment using both manual and mechanical methods.
Prepare surgical trays, set up case carts, maintain inventory, and troubleshoot sterilization equipment.
Work efficiently with attention to cost‑effective use of time and materials.
Participate actively as a team member and uphold UPMC’s Core Values through reliable, compassionate, and detail‑driven work.
Perform additional duties as needed to support patient care and department operations.
