About The Position

The Department of Environment, Health & Safety is seeking a Certification Specialist to join their Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC) team. If you enjoy troubleshooting technical problems and working collaboratively, this position could be a great fit for you! Under the direction of the Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) Field Supervisor, the Certification Specialist provides repairs, maintenance, and certification at the University of Wisconsin-Madison research laboratories. This includes working with biological safety cabinets, fume hoods, and HEPA filtration systems. This position is a great opportunity to learn new skills and be a part of a team that helps keep the campus safe! A Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) serves as the primary means to protect the laboratory worker and the surrounding environment from pathogens. All exhaust air is HEPA-filtered as it exits the biosafety cabinet, removing harmful bacteria and viruses. BSCs are designed to provide personnel, environmental and product protection when appropriate practices and procedures are followed. This position will require problem-solving skills and critical thinking to ensure the certification and repairs of lab equipment. All technical training will be provided by the UW BSC team! Ongoing/Renewable Full-Time: 100% FTE Hours generally scheduled Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM– 3:30 PM. Work is performed onsite.

Requirements

  • Experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical or other trades-type work. Experience with lab equipment and repairs will also qualify. This experience does not need to be extensive.
  • Desire to learn, problem solve, and think critically
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive working relationships

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Biological Safety Cabinet testing, HEPA caisson systems, electrical troubleshooting, and/or air balancing
  • National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) accreditation

Responsibilities

  • Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes
  • Perform annual certification to Clean Air device and HEPA filtered equipment systems to ensure the health and safety of laboratories
  • Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
  • Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
  • Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
  • Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
  • Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
