About The Position

The Lead Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in supporting patient safety and high‑quality care by leading daily pharmacy operations across hospital settings. Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role serves as a clinical and operational resource for pharmacy technicians, supports sterile and hazardous compounding, and helps ensure medications are prepared, delivered, and managed accurately and efficiently to meet patient needs. A hospital Lead Pharmacy Technician is a healthcare professional who plays an integral role in the pharmacy operations. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in the distribution of medications to patients in the hospital (inpatient and outpatient units, emergency room, and operating room). The distribution of medications, includes but is not limited to, selecting, counting, compounding, packing, labeling, and delivering medications to the units. The Lead Pharmacy Technician are responsible for the preparation of sterile compounds, including chemotherapy and hazardous substances. Lead Pharmacy Technicians act as resource and subject matter experts to the other Pharmacy Technicians, intervening in challenging situations and working to resolve escalated issues. Employees will work in multiple areas of the pharmacy to maintain competency and broaden skills for all areas of the job scope.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or GED
  • Active National Pharm Tech Cert (CPhT) is required Approved cert is through Pharm Tech Cert Board (PCTB) and ExCPT Cert by the National Healthcareer Association Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Must be able to compound sterile products and maintain a sterile environment
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Up to 1 year experience Technical Pharmacy Experience must be as a Pharmacy Technician II and will become chemo trained upon promotion
  • Must be minimally a Pharmacy Technician II and become chemo trained to be eligible to move into the Lead Pharmacy Technician position.
  • Required to train in compounding sterile hazardous medications and to be available to compound hazardous medications when the need arises.
  • Will be working with hazardous and toxic substances

Responsibilities

  • Proficient in unit dose dispensing duties, operating equipment, non-sterile compounding, and sterile compounding duties.
  • Assists the pharmacist in non-sterile medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, packaging, scanning, labeling, filling, and delivering medications per department guidelines and policies.
  • Selects the appropriate medications and accurately labels the medications, and all skills related to non-sterile and sterile compounding.
  • Prioritizes IV medication production, and appropriately, disposes of waste appropriately.
  • Adheres to all safety requirements.
  • Accurately and efficiently transports medications.
  • Can perform other roles as needed.
  • Responsible for inventory control through stock rotation, removal of expired medications, reordering/stocking of medications/supplies when stock is low, and packaging/assembling medications for future dispensing.
  • Ensures safe storage of medications.
  • Also maintains an accurate controlled substances (CII-CV) inventory and for reviewing and maintaining controlled substance records.
  • Immediately reports unresolved controlled discrepancies to a supervisor.
  • Knows how to run and utlilize CII Safe and pyxis reports.
  • Uses pharmacy technology, following department standards of work, policies, and workflows.
  • Maintains the pharmacy automation (changing consumables, cleaning, etc)., and Indentifies, troubleshoots, and reports pharmacy automation issues.
  • Accesses patient information, processes in-basket Rx Messages, and prints labels in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and leads the team of Pharmacy Technicians, ensuring that efficient and quality pharmacy services are provided to patients.
  • Intervenes in challenging situations and works to resolve any escalated issues, when necessary.
  • Leads by example by responding politely and professionally to nursing/physician or other requests via telephone or in person.
  • Appropriately manages, triages, and ensures timely follow-up of all requests.
  • Identifies critical issues, prioritizes workload, an communicates to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Consults with and updates supervisor, as needed regarding any team issues, task difficulties, complex problems to ensure appropriate resolution, and recognizes team members who are going up and beyond.
  • Works with supervisor/manager on process and workflow improvement.
  • Ensures that the Inpatient pharmacy delivers quality services in accordance with pharmacy policy and standards of work and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution drugs.
  • Identifies patient safety issues related to medication use and works on resolutions.
  • Provides input in the hiring, promotion, and performance evaluation of Inpatient Pharmacy Technician.
  • Trains, orients, and mentors new staff members to facilitate attainment of required job skills and knowledge.
  • Assists in developing training materials.
  • Responsible for staff performance audits.
  • Provides feedback on Technician I-IV's yearly appraisals.
  • Develops schedule/enters schedule in Kronos.
