About The Position

The Athens Orthopedic Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center is a 3 OR orthopedic ASC providing professional and quality patient care in a cohesive team environment. This role may require occasional travel to off-site or affiliated facilities. The Certified Surgical Tech (CST) assigned to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Operating Room area will be responsible for successful completion of the following job duties: 1. Preparation of surgical procedures. 2. Completion of the sterilization process of equipment 3. Turnover of operating rooms 4. Stocking of supplies. Tech is responsible for assisting the Provider by performing clerical tasks, interviewing patients and gathering medical information and offers care and treatment to patients under the supervision of a Provider and follows AOC’s Policies and Procedures, Values and Mission Statement. In the Operating Room, the CST handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. The CST is responsible for assisting the Provider and assessing patient’s needs in compliance with established standards of care and practice and all regulatory, accrediting and legal requirements. The CST is responsible for all equipment and supplies on the hall and for promoting teamwork among co-workers, patients, families, Providers and AOC associates. The CST participates in committees and community efforts and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited Surgical Tech program.
  • Current certification as Surgical Tech.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • One (1) year experience preferred.
  • Must be an energetic, flexible, multi-tasking team member.
  • A high school diploma or high school equivalency
  • Complete an accredited Surgical Technician program and pass an examination
  • Certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or the National C enter of C ompetency Testing
  • Maintain current CPR certification
  • Knowledge of medical supplies, ordering procedures, inventory and clerical skills is helpful
  • Must be sensitive to other people’s feelings and reactions and understand how pain affects their patients
  • Understand instructions and ask questions when confused
  • Knowledge of orthopedic anatomy and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment
  • Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation
  • Ability to sit/stand for long periods
  • Ability to walk varying distances
  • Capability for occasional overhead and low reaching.
  • Must be able to climb, bend, crouch, squat, crawls, kneel, balance, pull with force, reach above head and shoulder, twist at waist, lift from the floor up, lift from the waist up, lift from the shoulder/head
  • Ability to visually and audibly perform all essential functions for timely responsiveness.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Precise hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity required.

Responsibilities

  • Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards
  • Inspects equipment for proper working condition
  • Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures
  • Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure
  • Arranges instruments according to given procedure
  • Confirms that instruments work properly
  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays
  • Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy
  • Correctly uses, cares for, cleans, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed
  • Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure
  • Assists in storing and stocking supplies as directed
  • Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons’ preference cards
  • Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
  • Documents patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures
  • Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient’s status
