Job Summary The Charge Nurse position is responsible for providing quality nursing care to residents and coordinating total nursing care within our facility. The Charge Nurse will implement specific procedures and programs, work alongside the Director of Nursing in establishing goals, and ensure compliance with all operating policies, state health regulations, and federal healthcare administration regulations. In partnership with the DON and Case Manager, this role involves supervising personnel and providing reports.

Requirements

  • Nursing degree from an accredited college or university or graduate from an approved RN or LPN program.
  • Current, unencumbered, active RN or LPN license in South Dakota.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and handle challenging situations with tact.
  • Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, geriatric care laws, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Leadership and supervisory abilities to work harmoniously with and manage other personnel.
  • Patient, tactful, cheerful, and enthusiastic disposition, especially when dealing with difficult residents.
  • Willingness to embrace new methods and principles to enhance existing nursing practices.
  • Ability to communicate with resident conditions effectively.
  • Must be able to push and pull 60 pounds, lift 50 pounds, and carry 15 pounds with two hands.

Responsibilities

  • Model the values, mission, and vision of the organization.
  • Support the facility's commitment to safe practices, infection control, and residents' rights.
  • Evaluate and assess residents on admission to develop interim care plans and update care plans as needed.
  • Analyze resident information to develop appropriate interventions to prevent decline and notify appropriate staff of changes.
  • Ensure safety and sanitation standards in residents' rooms and work areas.
  • Prepare and administer medications as ordered, order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment, and maintain controlled substances inventories.
  • Participate in orienting new staff to the unit.
  • Make rounds with physicians, physician's assistants, and nurse practitioners.
  • Respond to emergencies, assess residents' conditions, and provide necessary medical attention.
  • Notify the resident's physician and/or next of kin of incidents or changes in the resident's condition.
  • Consult with the resident's physician in providing care, treatments, rehabilitation, etc.
  • Administer professional services within the scope of nursing practice, such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, and wound care.
  • Follow organizational policies and procedures when providing nursing care.
  • Obtain specimens for lab tests as ordered.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents as necessary.
  • Oversee and ensure personnel providing direct care to residents follow the care plan and residents' wishes.
  • Supervise certified nursing assistants and medication aides, determine work procedures, and evaluate, counsel, and discipline staff.
  • Receive and transcribe physician's orders in accordance with facility procedures.
  • Complete necessary charting and documentation in accordance with established policies.
  • Provide support and perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or Assisted Living.
