Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

Responsibilities

  • Draw and examine samples of petroleum products, antifreeze and brake fluid for laboratory analysis. Remove from sale products which do not conform to established standards. Oversee disposition of stop sale commodities and authorize release when standards are met.
  • Analyze petroleum products to verify compliance with the latest American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and/or state of Florida specifications using the appropriate methods and Standard Operating Procedures. (Analyses are assigned based on complexity and number based on the position title. This position will be assigned a combination of complexity and/or number of analyses different than chemists of equal standing due to field responsibilities). Utilize the bureau's Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to aide in the collection, analysis, review and authorization of analytical results, quality control system and other associated laboratory information. Maintain, calibrate and operate analytical instrumentation with minimal supervision by senior chemists and/or laboratory manager to facilitate accurate and timely sample analyses. Maintain an inventory of supplies and parts required to ensure accurate and timely analyses of samples via assigned instrumentation.
  • Participate in the bureau's Quality Control Program. This includes proper and successful analyses of proficiency samples in addition to routine quality control procedures as dictated by the bureau's quality control plan. Mix, analyze, and distribute quality control standards, as needed.
  • Record all inspections, findings, observations and field actions on official report forms. Submit reports of disposition of violations to bureau supervision. Submit accurate records of daily activities and travel incurred in fulfilling assignments. Submit accurate travel and other expense documents in accordance with department policies. Keep database up to date and in compliance with established directives and report any problems with its operations to bureau management. Follow department and bureau purchasing guidelines and submit required documentation to bureau offices, as needed. Maintain assigned test equipment in prescribed condition.
  • Receive and unpack sample cases while observing strict safety rules due to the flammable nature of the samples. Prepare samples, prioritize and distribute using quantitative and qualitative judgments. Keep records and determine priorities of all types of shipments to and from the laboratory.
  • Keep up to date with applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the analysis of petroleum products, safety rules, analytical procedures, and available instrumentation.
  • Perform other related duties such as, but not limited to, administrative paperwork and other non-technical duties as required by management. Employee may be asked to perform special duties in relation to the Departments Emergency Response Obligations.
