GRADE 18 LOCATION OF POSITION Maryland Department of the Environment Water Supply Program Laboratory Certification Section 1800 Washington Blvd. Baltimore MD 21230 Main Purpose of Job The Chemist Supervisor provides essential management, technical oversight, and regulatory consultation for the Maryland Water Quality Laboratory Certification Program (LCP). Its primary purpose is to protect the health of Maryland residents by ensuring the safety of drinking water through the oversight of laboratories responsible for public water system compliance, new well potability analyses, and other MDE program monitoring. As a function of Maryland’s primacy enforcement responsibility under federal regulations, this role includes: Budgetary and financial oversight of laboratory fees and assessment services. Investigation of compliance data required for Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) implementation. Coordination of laboratory services during natural or emergency events. Serving as Maryland’s liaison to the EPA’s Water Laboratory Alliance. Please note that the use of protective equipment, including goggles, gloves, and masks, is required for this position. The incumbent will be required to drive a State vehicle. If you hold an out-of-state driver’s license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the issuing state’s Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of hire. All individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record to operate a State vehicle.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science which includes completion of at least 24 credit hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience performing laboratory chemical analysis work in a public health or chemistry laboratory.
  • Possession of a Master’s degree in chemistry or related science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Possession of a Doctorate degree in chemistry from an accredited college or university may be substituted for three years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in chemistry classification or chemistry specialty codes in the chemistry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
  • Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

  • Certified EPA Certification Officer: Qualified for Drinking Water laboratories.
  • Over four years of experience as an analyst within a laboratory setting.
  • Two years of supervisory and managerial experience within local, State, federal government agencies.
