About The Position

WIRED is seeking an established expert with a with a distinct point of view and a commanding voice to cover the business of tech, which encompasses the impact of artificial intelligence, the power of platforms, the future of work, and much more. In this role, you’ll be responsible for consistently breaking high-impact news. Our priority is ambitious, impactful work. That can take many forms: a major scoop, a deeply reported investigation, timely analysis, or a special project. This is a role for a highly seasoned and experienced writer with both authority and style—someone who doesn’t just observe the culture but shapes the conversation around it. We are interested in experienced journalists who are public personalities —on television, at live events, or across social platforms . The ideal candidate sees the connective tissue between industries and institutions, between Silicon Valley and Washington, between Business and Wall Street, between cultural shifts and boardroom decisions. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to deliver scoops, exclusives, and stories that can’t be found anywhere else. We’re interested in hard news and the ability to put new information into a broader context. You’ll also be expected to contribute to WIRED in other ways. That includes collaborating with journalists on other desks, and pitching and writing long-form features on your beat. You should also be prepared to engage in a wide range of storytelling formats, such as social, podcasts, video series, and live events. This senior correspondent will report to WIRED’s director, business and industry, and will be part of a growing and increasingly global newsroom of smart, kind, collaborative, and well-informed colleagues who are always brimming with ideas and eager to help each other out. This is a guild position.

Requirements

• At least 12 years experience as a business journalist with a track record of breaking news, driving subscriber growth, and building and reaching a large audience
• A proven track record of scoops and the ability to consistently break high-impact news
• Deep and extensive sourcing within the tech world and a keen understanding of how influence is brokered in today’s world.
• Cross market and cultural understanding as to what stories resonate for WIRED audiences outside of the US.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, valuing originality and rigor in equal measure.
• Proven ability to work well with others, across departments, both within and outside of WIRED
• Highly skilled and passionate about coaching and mentoring more junior Writers.
• Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage a constantly evolving workload and prioritize appropriately
• A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing style

Responsibilities

• Break high-impact news and consistently offer scoops through original reporting and insider knowledge, working with a high degree of autonomy, always with the WIRED strategy and vision in mind.
• Report and write at least six stories per month, balancing quick scoops and exclusives with longer, differentiated work
• Consistently bring fresh, innovative ideas and sharp angles to industry coverage—placing news in broader social, political, and/or cultural context, and expanding meaning and significance
• Work closely with the Executive Editor and the Senior Director to define and shape editorial strategy for the business desk
• Work as a team leader with Writers to report and break news, working sources together and building your beat.
• Appear regularly as WIRED's authority on the business of tech, whether in video franchises, live events, podcast and media partnerships, as well as in traditional press, consistently considering new ways to reach our audiences.
• Lead collaboration with writers, editors, and the wider editorial team, including the social team, to shape our multi-platform storytelling (print, web, video, podcast, live).
• Maintain a highly visible presence on social media and in public forums, always considering how you can strengthen both personal and WIRED brand equity.
• Take a lead role in working across global teams, identifying relevant stories for WIRED markets, and driving collaboration between teams.
