The practice of a physician assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician. Medical services rendered by physician assistants may include, but are not limited to, obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting at surgery; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals. Physician Assistants, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposes, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and the patient's private physician is not immediately available. In addition, Chief PAs responsibilities include interviewing and training new PAs; general supervision of PAs, assisting in reviewing performance and determining merit raises for PAs; assisting in the discipline of PAs, preparing work schedules and general supervision for PAs; assisting with payroll; assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; liaison between department staff; nursing units, referring physicians, house staff officers and secretarial staff; assists with administrative issues for all department PAs, participate in leadership activities and training. Further responsibilities may include overseeing completion and submission of routine and special reports, oversee various research protocols; data preparation for departmental studies and/or projects. The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, patient homes, nursing homes and other institution settings. In addition to the Core Skills listed here, the Chief PA will request validation to perform department specific skills.
