About The Position

The Saw Filer is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimizing all saw blades and cutting tools used in the sawmill. This role is critical to ensuring production efficiency, product quality, and safe mill operations.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required
2–3+ years of saw filing experience in a sawmill or similar industrial environment preferred
Experience with band saws, circular saws, and filing room equipment
Strong knowledge of saw sharpening, tensioning, and alignment techniques
Ability to read and interpret measurements and technical specifications
Experience with welding, grinding, and metal fabrication (preferred)
Familiarity with preventative maintenance and equipment calibration
Ability to use precision measuring instruments accurately
Strong attention to detail and precision workmanship
Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
Ability to troubleshoot saw and equipment issues quickly
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to safety and quality standards
Ability to stand for long periods and work in a fast-paced industrial environment to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform repetitive physical tasks
Comfortable working with sharp tools and heavy machinery
Sawmill or industrial manufacturing setting
Exposure to noise, dust, and moving machinery
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required at all times

Responsibilities

Inspect, sharpen, level, and tension band saws and circular saws to maintain optimal cutting performance
Perform routine maintenance and repairs on saw blades, knives, and filing equipment
Align saws and machinery to ensure accurate lumber sizing and quality output
Monitor saw wear and performance; troubleshoot issues and recommend corrective actions
Use precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers) to maintain exact tolerances
Perform welding, grinding, and re-tipping of saw teeth as needed
Maintain filing room equipment and ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Work closely with production and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and improve efficiency
Follow all company safety procedures and participate in safety programs and inspections
Keep accurate maintenance and repair records
Saw filers play a key role in keeping equipment operating at peak condition by sharpening, adjusting, and maintaining cutting tools to precise specifications.
