About The Position

KLJ is seeking a Transportation Engineer II to support the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects throughout Colorado. This role includes work on projects for CDOT, municipalities, counties, and other regional agencies.  You’ll contribute to roadway, highway, multimodal, and rehabilitation projects that improve mobility, enhance safety, and support Colorado’s continued growth.  This position is ideal for an engineer who has mastered the fundamentals and is ready to expand technical ownership, deepen agency coordination experience, and continue progressing toward PE licensure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • 1–3 years of relevant transportation experience.
  • Familiarity with CDOT design manuals, Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, and M&S Standards.
  • Understanding of AASHTO design criteria.
  • Experience with Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads, or similar design tools.
  • Knowledge of transportation permitting and compliance requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear communicator across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Collaborative team contributor with growing leadership capability.

Nice To Haves

  • EIT certification preferred; active pursuit of PE encouraged and supported.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze project data including field surveys, GIS information, subsurface utilities, geotechnical reports, and traffic data.
  • Support the design and development of transportation infrastructure in accordance with CDOT standards, AASHTO guidelines, and applicable federal and local requirements.
  • Assist with geometric roadway design, drainage considerations, traffic control plans, and corridor improvement concepts.
  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, quantities, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Coordinate with CDOT personnel, local agencies, and regulatory authorities throughout project development and permitting.
  • Support preparation of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) packages.
  • Participate in risk identification, constructability reviews, and design quality control processes.
  • Assist with field visits, construction observation, and coordination meetings.
  • Contribute to sustainable and resilient design solutions aligned with state and federal transportation goals.
  • Maintain compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and KLJ quality expectations.
