About The Position

The Civilian Control Room Operator is responsible for maintaining the security of the detention center through continuous monitoring, communication, and control of facility access systems. This position may be assigned to perform duties in any functional area as needed and is required to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. This position is not eligible for benefits. Supervision Received: Works under the close supervision of the on-duty Sergeant or Officer in Charge (OIC). Supervision Exercised: None

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of general work experience.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening.
  • Successful completion of the probationary period prior to consideration for advancement.
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of business English, legal terminology, basic mathematics, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, filing, and typing.
  • Skill in operating calculators, personal computers, and software applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Ability to write legibly and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to think independently, exercise sound judgment, and remain calm under pressure.
  • Light physical effort associated with clerical duties.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Occasional exposure to emotionally demanding situations.
  • Work is performed indoors in an institutional environment with little or no exposure to the outdoors during shifts.

  • This civilian position requires no direct contact with incarcerated individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor interior and exterior areas of the detention center using CCTV, video recording equipment, intercom systems, radios, and direct observation.
  • Observe and monitor the activities of incarcerated individuals and staff to ensure safety and security.
  • Report unusual activity or emergency situations to the Shift Sergeant or OIC in a timely manner.
  • Handle all incoming radio communications to the detention center.
  • Answer and manage after-hours incoming telephone calls.
  • Control and operate all electrically secured doors in accordance with established guidelines to facilitate the movement and admittance of staff and incarcerated individuals.
  • Communicate with incarcerated individuals via intercom and radio as required for operational purposes.
  • Maintain records and reports related to assigned duties.
  • Observe incarcerated individuals entering and exiting areas visible from the control room.
  • Operate computer terminals and related equipment, including CCTV systems, radios, and electronic door controls.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and professional control room environment, including light housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, wiping counters, and cleaning bathroom areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by a supervisor.
